Uncle Lucius is a great up-and-coming soulful “country rock” band from Austin Texas featuring the lead vocals of Kevin Galloway. We were fortunate to see (and dance to) them live at their first ever Oregon show in the summer of 2011, and we’re thrilled to just learn they’re coming here again July 2012.
Daniel Lanois with Trixie Whitley, Brian Blade and Daryl Johnson in the studio rehearsing material from their inaugural 2010 release, Black Dub, available at your favorite music seller. As a listener comments, “Four great performers at the top of their game enjoying making great music together.” Absolutely! Black Dub is a major music event. Video recorded by Mark Howard and directed by Adam Vollick, see more at our playlist.
One of our favorite singers since we saw her opening for Sheryl Crow a couple of years ago. She always sells out the smaller local theater when she plays our town, but we just scored a pair of tickets to her show in a couple of days. Thank you craigslist and the folks who bought extras for family without knowing they were really for us! Here she is with The Story, one of her hits, and one of our favorites, this time a major production with her hometown Seattle Symphony.
Add Note: She was wonderful solo here, really enjoyed the show!!

Railroad Earth, hard-playing and hard-touring bluegrass band based in Stillwater, NJ – this performance from the Colonial Theater, Keene, NH on 2-21-2009. We were blessed to watch a live webcast of their New Years Eve show at the Ogden Theater in Denver last evening. See my personalized Railroad Earth youtube playlist for lots more of their quality videos.
The River’s Gonna Run by Sam Bush with Emmylou Harris from several years ago, still powerful track if somewhat different styling for the founder of Newgrass Revival and much more. Bush was also a member of Emmylou’s band The Nash Ramblers for 5 years, and now has The Sam Bush Band.

This episode features an 18-plus-minute instrumental track by one of our favorite newgrass jam bands, Donna The Buffalo, recorded by Tim Andersen on August 15, 1998 at the Magic Valley Music Festival in Tunbridge, Vermont. This track is thankfully preserved in the Internet Archive where you may listen to or download the entire show.
We weren’t there and are not certain but we believe this particular edition of the band consisted of Jeb Puryear on guitar and/or fiddle, Tara Nevins on fiddle, scrubboard and accordian, Jim Miller on guitar, Joe Thrift on keyboards, Jed Greenberg on bass, and Tom Gilbert on drums.
Please support taper-friendly bands like Donna the Buffalo by attending their shows and buying merchandise. Without their liberal taping policy, this live track would likely have disappeared forever and what a loss if we never got to hear it!
I just had to repost this “old-time jam” here because of the interesting contingent of talented musicians in it. From the 1994 Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman NY (still going strong into its 21st year in 2012). This cast includes Tara Nevins, Jeb Puryear, Joe Thrift, Riley Baugus, Steve Mason, Tom Riccio, Judy Hyman, Jeff Claus, Timmy Brown, Alex Scala, Keith Brand, Jeff Goehring, Susie Goehring, John Hoffman, Chad Crumm, Beverly Smith. Quite fun to experience nearly 2 decades later. Tune by Emery Bailey and video by Dave Seehausen.
This whole band is solid, but on this track you gotta see the fiddler! Townes Van Zandt’s White Freightliner Blues performed by the up-and-coming bluegrass band Driftwood, at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Music Festival in Silk Hope NC, taped Oct. 10, 2011 by burskee59. The band is guitarist-vocalist Dan Forsyth, banjo player-vocalist Joe Kollar, bassist Jon Doll, and that violinist-vocalist Claire Byrne. Holy smokin’ 18 wheels, baby!
Oregon/Colorado-based gypsy jamgrass band, Taarka, recorded in 2008 at Mystic Hot Springs, Utah. Since we live in the same Oregon town as Taarka’s often drummer, Dale Largent, we get to see them on occasion. (Just danced last evening to Dale and another of his several bands, Bend’s Moon Mountain Ramblers, great fun!)
Dead Winter Carpenters from Lake Tahoe will be among the fine acts at the 2012 4 Peaks Music Festival in our neighborhood (Bend OR) June 22-24, along with Melvin Seals and JGB, Hot Buttered Rum, Poor Man’s Whiskey, The Mother Hips, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, and more! DWC includes former members of the Montana Slim String Band. This video was recorded at Mystic Hot Springs in Utah. See our 4 Peaks youtube playlist for more samples and their blog or facebook page for details and tickets.
Chicago bluegrass band, Cornmeal, making an appreciated appearance in our town, at Century Center Ballroom, Bend OR, on March 13, 2012, playing Southern Flavor. One of our favorite bands they were not to be missed, and those were our bouncing hatted heads in the near left of the first half of the video or so. See more of their videos at our Cornmeal youtube playlist. Thank you to the taper and to Cornmeal for traveling out to Oregon!
Bellingham WA bluegrass band Polecat performs their original song, Turnbull Reel, live from their 2011 album Fire on the Hill, live at The Roost in Bellingham. We had a great time dancing to them on a recent night in our town (Bend OR) and certainly recommend you see this young band yourself. See more of Polecat and other fine bluegrass bands on our youtube playlist.
Chicago jamgrass band Cornmeal playing a great extended track, Midnight, at The Bluegrass Ball at The Bluebird in Bloomington IN on 1/29/2011. Exceptional video work by mytalltripod makes this performance even more special. As we post this, we’re eagerly anticipating an evening of full-on dancing when Cornmeal comes through our town a couple of days from now, in a double bill with Hot Buttered Rum! Watch for them this week if you’re on the west coast.
The legendary Van Morrison and his brilliant band perform a perhaps lesser known but very powerful title track from the album “Enlightenment” (copyright lyrics and music by Exile).
Greensky Bluegrass performs “Stop That Train” at Greyfox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill NY on 7/15/2010.
New York based trio, Red Molly, performs “Fallin In” at Harrisburg PA in Sept 2010. We’ll be seeing Red Molly for our second time tomorrow as they pass through our area.
